I recently tried to set up availability in my calendar for off-site meetings only to accommodate clients during renovations.

  1. I created off-site versions of each event type
  2. I set up a secondary calendar with days/times available for off-site events
  3. I set up exceptions in my on-site calendar so those events could not be booked
  4. I added availability to the off-site calendar with specific dates/times

My calendar showed no availability at all during the renovations and I don’t know what I did wrong.

I’d like to be able to be able to do this in future, what should I have done?

In these cases where you’re seeing unexpected unavailability, the first thing I recommend checking is the Troubleshooting Tool - This tool will show you exactly which times are blocked off, and why, you can read more about how to use this tool here: How to troubleshoot unavailable times that should be available
