I sometimes have things in my diary that aren’t meetings, so I remove them to increase the availability shown in calendly. 

The issue is that it takes quite a long time for the changes to be reflected, and some times it doesn’t update at all! Right now, I’m dead certain the event is correctly set up and I have a 2.5 hour window of time in my afternoon and it’s not showing. I’ve had to remove a 3 day event from my calendar, whcih worked for tomorrow (several slots are now available) but not for today. 

 

What might I be doing wrong? Or is this a bug?

Seems like you’re running into a few issues here. The first thing I’d recommend is disconnecting and reconnecting your calendar from your connections page here: https://calendly.com/app/availability/calendar_settings

This won’t effect your booked meetings at all, instead, it allows for the connection to sort of ‘refresh’ and pick up any changes to the calendars that may have occurred over the years. Could you give this a try and let me know if it works?
