I’m wondering which plan to subscribe to. If I need 2 different types of “event”, like one for a discovery call and one for a full appointment, can I use the free plan, or do I need to get the 1st level pay plan?

In your case, the Standard Plan would fit your case best, as this lets you create multiple types of events! :)
With the free plan, you can only have one event under your account, so upgrading to the standard would allow you to run both Discovery calls and appointments. You can read more about pricing and our offers here: https://calendly.com/pricing
